Exponential forms of hyperbolic functions — 9231 FP2

Use exponential definitions and identities consistently.

Notes and key methods

Definitions are \(\displaystyle \sinh x= \frac{e^{x}- e^{- x}}{2}\), \(\displaystyle \cosh x= \frac{e^{x}+ e^{- x}}{2}\), \(\displaystyle \tanh x= \frac{\sinh x}{\cosh x}\), and \(\displaystyle \operatorname{sech}x= \frac{1}{\cosh x}\). They imply \(\displaystyle \cosh ^{2}x-\sinh ^{2}x=1\).

Unlike cos x, cosh x is at least one for real x. Sinh is odd and strictly increasing; cosh is even. Work from exponentials when proving a hyperbolic identity rather than borrowing an unchecked circular-trigonometric sign.
