Discriminants and quadratic roots — 0606

Use completed-square and factor forms for different questions.

Notes and key methods

The form \(a(x-h)^2+k\) reveals a vertex; a factor form reveals roots. With a>0 the vertex is a minimum. The discriminant \(\displaystyle b^{2}-4ac\) is positive, zero or negative according as there are two distinct, one repeated or no real roots.

For an upward-opening quadratic with distinct roots \(\displaystyle u<v, f(x)\le 0\) precisely on [u,v]. A line-intersection problem is a quadratic equation after substitution; check both coordinates.

Three worked examples

Example 1 · Quadratics, roots and extrema

\(f{\left(x \right)} = 3 x^{2} - 18 x - 21\).

Diagram for this worked example
Use the labelled scales alongside the numerical method.
  1. Express f(x) in completed-square form and state its minimum.
  2. Solve \(\displaystyle f(x)=0\).
  3. Solve \(\displaystyle f(x)\le 0\).
  4. Find the discriminant.
Show the reasoning

(a)

\(3 \left(x - 3\right)^{2} - 48 = 3 \left(x - 3\right)^{2} - 48\); the minimum is -48 at \(\displaystyle x=3\).

Answer: \(3 \left(x - 3\right)^{2} - 48\); minimum \(-48\) at \(\displaystyle x=3\).

(b)

\(\left(x - 3\right)^{2} = 16\) gives the two square-root branches.

Answer: \(\left\{-1, 7\right\}\)

(c)

The upward-opening graph lies on or below the axis between its roots.

Answer: \(\left[-1, 7\right]\)

(d)

Compute \(\displaystyle b^{2}-4ac\) from expanded coefficients.

\(576\)

Answer: \(576\).

Example 2 · Quadratics, roots and extrema

\(f{\left(x \right)} = x^{2} - 8 x - 9\).

Diagram for this worked example
Use the labelled scales alongside the numerical method.
  1. Express f(x) in completed-square form and state its minimum.
  2. Solve \(\displaystyle f(x)=0\).
  3. Solve \(\displaystyle f(x)\le 0\).
  4. Find the discriminant.
Show the reasoning

(a)

\(\left(x - 4\right)^{2} - 25 = \left(x - 4\right)^{2} - 25\); the minimum is -25 at \(\displaystyle x=4\).

Answer: \(\left(x - 4\right)^{2} - 25\); minimum \(-25\) at \(\displaystyle x=4\).

(b)

\(\left(x - 4\right)^{2} = 25\) gives the two square-root branches.

Answer: \(\left\{-1, 9\right\}\)

(c)

The upward-opening graph lies on or below the axis between its roots.

Answer: \(\left[-1, 9\right]\)

(d)

Compute \(\displaystyle b^{2}-4ac\) from expanded coefficients.

\(100\)

Answer: \(100\).

Example 3 · Quadratics, roots and extrema

\(f{\left(x \right)} = 2 x^{2} - 20 x + 42\).

Diagram for this worked example
Use the labelled scales alongside the numerical method.
  1. Express f(x) in completed-square form and state its minimum.
  2. Solve \(\displaystyle f(x)=0\).
  3. Solve \(\displaystyle f(x)\le 0\).
  4. Find the discriminant.
Show the reasoning

(a)

\(2 \left(x - 5\right)^{2} - 8 = 2 \left(x - 5\right)^{2} - 8\); the minimum is -8 at \(\displaystyle x=5\).

Answer: \(2 \left(x - 5\right)^{2} - 8\); minimum \(-8\) at \(\displaystyle x=5\).

(b)

\(\left(x - 5\right)^{2} = 4\) gives the two square-root branches.

Answer: \(\left\{3, 7\right\}\)

(c)

The upward-opening graph lies on or below the axis between its roots.

Answer: \(\left[3, 7\right]\)

(d)

Compute \(\displaystyle b^{2}-4ac\) from expanded coefficients.

\(64\)

Answer: \(64\).
