Three small smooth spheres \(A,B,C\), of equal radii and masses \(m\) kg, 2 kg and 4 kg respectively, lie at rest in that order in a straight line on a smooth horizontal plane. Sphere \(A\) is projected directly towards \(B\) at \(2m\text{ m s}^{-1}\), and \(B\) is projected directly towards \(A\) at \((m+2)\text{ m s}^{-1}\). After their collision, both move in the direction of \(A\)\(\text{’}\)s original motion, with speeds \(2\text{ m s}^{-1}\) and \(3.25\text{ m s}^{-1}\), respectively.
(a) Find \(m\). [4]
Sphere \(B\) subsequently collides with \(C\). After this collision, both move in the same direction. The loss of kinetic energy in the \(B\)–\(C\) collision is 6.875 J.
(b) Determine whether there is a further collision between \(A\) and \(B\). [6]
