June 2020 p13 q3
657
In each of parts (a), (b) and (c), the graph shown with solid lines has equation \(y = f(x)\). The graph shown with broken lines is a transformation of \(y = f(x)\).
(a) State, in terms of \(f\), the equation of the graph shown with broken lines.
(b) State, in terms of \(f\), the equation of the graph shown with broken lines.
(c) State, in terms of \(f\), the equation of the graph shown with broken lines.
Solution
(a) The transformation shown is a reflection in the y-axis. The equation of the transformed graph is \(y = f(-x)\).
(b) The transformation shown is a vertical stretch with a scale factor of 2. The equation of the transformed graph is \(y = 2f(x)\).
(c) The transformation shown is a translation 4 units to the left and 3 units down. The equation of the transformed graph is \(y = f(x+4) - 3\).
