June 2016 p42 q1
3685
Coplanar forces of magnitudes 7 N, 6 N, and 8 N act at a point in the directions shown in the diagram. Given that \(\sin \alpha = \frac{3}{5}\), find the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the three forces.
Solution
To find the resultant force, resolve the forces horizontally and vertically.
For the horizontal component:
\(X = 7 - 8 \cos \alpha - 6 \sin \alpha\)
Given \(\sin \alpha = \frac{3}{5}\), use \(\cos \alpha = \frac{4}{5}\) (since \(\sin^2 \alpha + \cos^2 \alpha = 1\)).
