June 2015 p43 q1
3450
A block is pulled along a horizontal floor by a horizontal rope. The tension in the rope is 500 N and the block moves at a constant speed of 2.75 m s-1. Find the work done by the tension in 40 s and find the power applied by the tension.
Solution
The work done by the tension is calculated using the formula:
\(ext{Work Done (WD)} = F imes s\)
where \(F = 500 \text{ N}\) is the tension and \(s\) is the distance traveled.
The distance \(s\) can be found using the speed \(v = 2.75 \text{ m/s}\) and time \(t = 40 \text{ s}\):
