The lengths of Western bluebirds are normally distributed with mean 16.5 cm and standard deviation 0.6 cm.
A random sample of 150 of these birds is selected.
How many of these 150 birds would you expect to have length between 15.4 cm and 16.8 cm?
Solution
To find the expected number of birds with lengths between 15.4 cm and 16.8 cm, we first standardize the lengths using the formula for the standard normal distribution:
\(Z = \frac{X - \mu}{\sigma}\)
For 15.4 cm: \(Z = \frac{15.4 - 16.5}{0.6} = -1.833\)
For 16.8 cm: \(Z = \frac{16.8 - 16.5}{0.6} = 0.5\)
We need to find \(P(-1.833 < Z < 0.5)\).
Using the standard normal distribution table, we find:
