A 8 kg particle moves right on a straight horizontal track with initial speed \(\displaystyle \frac{3m}{s}.A\) constant drive 40 N acts right and constant resistance 8 N acts left throughout a displacement 8 m. All other forces do no work.

  1. Calculate the work done by the drive and by the resistance, retaining their signs. [3]
  2. Use an energy method to find the final speed to 3 significant figures. [4]
  3. Independently check the final speed using Newton’s second law and constant-acceleration kinematics. [3]
