Hanging masses 24 kg and 4 kg are connected by a light inextensible string over a fixed smooth pulley and released from rest. The heavier particle starts \(\displaystyle \frac{567}{100}\) m above a floor and stops there without rebound. The lighter starts 4 m above that floor. It never reaches the pulley. After the heavier stops, the string becomes slack and the lighter continues freely under gravity until its first highest point. Use \(\displaystyle g= \frac{10m}{s^{2}}\).
- Find the common acceleration magnitude before the heavier particle reaches the floor, in \(\displaystyle \frac{m}{s^{2}}\). Explain your reasoning. [2]
- Find the lighter particle’s speed at the floor event, in m/s. Explain your reasoning. [2]
- Find the extra distance the lighter rises after the string becomes slack, in m. Explain your reasoning. [2]
