Define \(S_n=\sum_{r=1}^n(8r+7)\) for positive integers n.

  1. Prove by mathematical induction that \(\displaystyle \sum_{r= 1}^{n} (8r+ 7)= \frac{8n(n+ 1)}{2}+ 7n\) for every integer \(\displaystyle n\ge 1\). [4]
  2. Find the term added when extending \(\displaystyle S_{9}\) to \(\displaystyle S_{10}\). Explain your reasoning. [2]
  3. Find the base-case value \(\displaystyle S_{1}\). Explain your reasoning. [2]
